Scarce 1918 shot showing the tools of the trade of a schwere Kraftwagen-Flakbatterie (German Anti-Air unit)
Unused postcard providing a scarce view of what seems to be a late-war schwere Kraftwagen-Flak in its deployed state. I'm not sure when these models were introduced, but 1917-1918-ish most probably.
Three versions existed, a 8.0 cm, 8.8 cm and 10.5 cm. They are not A7V style rare, but in total, only around 250 pieces were made, making pictures quite scarce. The 8.8 cm by Krupp was made in the highest number (160), making it most probable that it is the type on scene. Differentiating between them is hard, as they mostly only had different dimensions. Each K-Flakbatterie had about 50 men to operate the two guns at their disposal. This must be a Bavarian one, based on the kokarden and a black mourning band - typical Bavarian.
Compared to other Kraftwagen-Flugabwehrkanonen (K-FLAK), these models were not mounted directly on a truck, but required a seperate tractor (Artillerie-Kraftzugmaschine), which is not on scene here.
Some data for the 8.8: The gun vehicle had a weight of 3 tonne, the truck 7 tonne. Greatest distance was 11 km meters and greatest altitude of the grenades about 7 km. Maximum elevation of the gun was 70°. Note the distinctive "striped" camouflage pattern on this particular specimen, which is in the deployed state with the massive support legs in their lowered position.
